My impressions:

Hey gadget freaks,

Again, its been a looooooong time since my last post.I am writing this post just after a mail i received from womworld/nokia :)

Here's the transcript:

"Hi Bharadwaj,

Thanks for requesting a Nokia trial from us. Are you present anywhere else online, as your current blog only has 3 posts on it this year?"

There you go! Thats the reason why i am here after a long time. Ok ok i am a lazy bastard thank you very much :) Now, lets get to My IMPRESSIONS on...

The NOKIA N 8 *cheers and huge applause from the crowd*

Here are some juicy press release photos from nokia :

Yes!! it comes in 5 colors :)

Silver,Dark Grey,Orange/Red,Ocean Blue,Green.

Now, let me start pointing out the basic specs and some fun facts about this symbian flagship from nokia.

1. First and foremost, this is the first phone from nokia boasting a 12 Megapixel camera with XENON flash and HD video recording at 720p.

Fun fact: Nokia claims it has put the largest sensor into the camera and its size rivals many
point and shoots.Onboard photo editor and video editor software help you to edit on the move.
720p recording is done with stereo audio. So, there you go, 2 mics on the nokia n8.

My impression: I have always seen that nokia's imaging capabilities are amazing and nokia n8 will live up to the mark with carl zeiss branded optics and supposedly great optics and of course XENON flash, nokia have done it again after the huge success of n82's xenon flash and its advantages in low light. And i am looking forward to low light performance of the camera without flash. Lets move on then..

2. And this phone is the first one to release with the next iteration of the symbian operating system the mighty SYMBIAN^3.

Fun facts: Multi touch has been implemented in symbian^3, so pinch and zoom in photos, web, and even change aspect ratio with that gesture in camera :).Overall the operating system is very fast thanks to native hardware acceleration of the UI.One touch paradigm has been implemented.3D games!!.It includes the highly anticipated addition of cross platform qt 4.6.2 that allows developers to create apps and deploy in multiple platforms.

Not so fun fact: The UI looks not so different from Symbian^1,but the functionality has been vastly improved. So, people who have hated symbian 1's UI will probably hate this too.

My impression:I have not covered much here,so look forward to my separate article on symbian^3.

3.Long awaited Hardware combo(CPU + GPU)for a symbian phone after nokia N95,n82 went off unutilized and failure of n97,5800 hardware.

Fun Fact: The cpu is ARM11 running at 680 MHZ. But nokia has been mum on what the GPU is.
They have not revealed anything on the SoC details too. But through unofficial benchmarks, the GPU is supposed to be very powerful considering OPENGL es 2.0 support.

My impression: Hardware accelerated UI, fast responsiveness, 3D games. It is a boon for gamer geeks and techies and of course developers who i am expecting will exploit the power.

4.Pentaband GSM 3G global phone

Fun fact: It works anywhere in the world, How about that??

My impression: Atlast a mass market phone that actually can reach every market including the two 3G bands in the united states.

5.USB on-the-go

Fun fact:You can now connect your memory stick or any usb storage(given the power constraints) to your phone as an extra storage device and transfer files between phone and the storage device.Dongle from micro usb to usb is part of the package.

My impression: This is a great step forward for nokia's vision of the mobile computer that literally can anything that a pc can do.

6.HDMI out

Fun fact: The nokia n8 outs 720p to a hdmi out. Like the usb otg dongle for mini hdmi to hdmi is provided in the box.The actual resolution is upped to 1280X720 while outputting to a HD screen.
Play HD videos taken in your phone or any 720p file to enjoy the full glory.

My impression: HDMI out is a great feature since it actually upscales 640x360 to 1280x720 onto the hd screen and coupled with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse you have a mini computer that you can operate from your couch :) Awesome!!!

7.Wireless technologies: Bluetooth 3.0,Wifi 802.11 b/g/n

My impression: Well, what not? downright good connectivity options.

8.Last but not least the announced price for this superphone is 370 euros = around 22k before taxes and subsidies. no subsidies for us indians so the final price will be 22k + 4% vat = around 23-24k final price. Please correct me on the taxes if i am wrong(do comment).

My impression: Whoa!!! same as the n97 mini price. Thats a great buy for the amount of attractive features that the phone delivers :) definitely buy, buy, buy!!!

These are the main features that i appreciated a lot and researched a lot and found them very attractive.

Other features you need to know:

*AMOLED capacitive screen offers amazing brightness and contrast(black looks like black).
*the usual 3.5 mm jack for audio, 2 mm nokia jack as well as micro usb for charging.
*16 GB of onboard mass storage extendable upto 48 Gb with Micro SD card slot.
*Nokia mail and chat inbuilt to messages application, supports multiple mail accounts.

Overall impressions:

Well,i love nokia and their ominous presence here in india and other emerging markets. With this device i think they have finally made a right melange of hardware and software(yeah yeah i love symbian too and i dont care how it looks, i am all in for the functionality alone). It is not a high end phone since meego will be the destined one.But for now, this phone is going to be nokia's symbian flagship and i love it despite many rants on symbian^3 and nokia lagging behind competitors. It has enough unique features to lure me into buying this phone that is so cheap for its features.

I am buying one, are you?
